New Terminal A Opens at Newark Airport
Nicholson attended the ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday to unveil the stunning new Terminal A at Newark Airport. Measuring over one million square feet of space, this is one of Nicholson’s largest projects to date.
Our team was selected to complete the carpentry scope including the interior and exterior columns, and ceilings for the concourse, baggage claim, back-of-house, exterior, and security areas. Throughout the project duration, we managed and coordinated over one thousand shipping containers of these specialty ceilings from Europe to the New Jersey port, during one of the most challenging times for global logistics. On site since 2018, our team had up to 100 skilled union tradesmen on site at a given time, working in tandem to coordinate with other trades to get the job done on time.
For the millwork scope, we furnished and installed all the back-of-house millwork, stone restroom countertops, and custom Corian jet diffusers on the departures level. Not only supporting major parts of the base building, Nicholson also provided carpentry and millwork installations for several concessions and support work throughout the Terminal. The ceilings, millwork, and masonry scope for the 2,700-space parking garage just across the skybridge from the Terminal was also a responsibility of Nicholson Corporation. Work will be continuing for our crews at EWR with the carpentry, millwork, and flooring scopes spread across the American, Delta, and United lounges.
Overall, Terminal A features 33 gates to handle larger aircraft, as well as a modernized common-use check-in area, security and baggage claim areas expected to efficiently handle an estimated 13.6 million passengers a year. You will also find state-of-the-art passenger amenities, dazzling artwork, digital technology, and dining and retail options provided by 60 regional, national, and global brands.
A special thank you to our trade partners that helped make this possible: SAS International, QC Facades, Decoform, CertainTeed, Inpro, Access Global, FBM, Von Rohr, Hilti, Kamco, Porcelanosa NYC, and GS Acoustics. We would also like to acknowledge our appreciation for the construction managers that we performed work including: Tutor Perini/Parsons, Conti, Holt, VRH, Swinerton, and Munich Airport NJ LLC.
Nicholson performed the work as a 100% certified WBE & MBE company to assist with the Port Authority’s commitment and vision for this LEED Silver project. At $2.7 billion, the new facility represents the largest single investment in New Jersey by the Port Authority in the agency’s 101-year history. The Nicholson team is extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a historic project.
